Countdown to Bejing Olympics - One week to go

Hi there,

Yes, the countdown to Beijing Olympics is really got into last stage and its just one week left for the biggest sporting competition in the world to start. Sports person from different parts of the world will play and will die hard for the pride of there country. Most tough competition is always between China, America and Russia for most number of medals, my bet is for china this time. Being held in China this year Olympics is very much in talk for the Birds Nest stadium where the opening ceremony and most of the sporting events will take place. More than 500 million dollars have been spent in the construction of this stadium and it took for 2 and a half month more than the scheduled time for the engineers and workers to finish the task.

Just wait for one week more to view all the event in the birds nest. Just have a look at the images of China national birds nest olympic stadium pics and wallpapers below.

Olympics VS Cricket

Well cricket may be my favorite game but no person in this world can ignore the biggest sporting event in this universe. Yes am talking about OLYMPICS. Being held in Beijing, China, I wish India will get couple of medals and not like one as I am observing from last few decades. And upon doing few research work I came to conclusion that this time Indian Olympics team can win around 7 to 10 medals, though I will not go in the detaisl of GOLD, SILVER or BRONZE ones. The medals tally we will check as Olympics start for the momment news is that:

Paul Hamm reigning Olympic gold medalist from US won’t be going to the Beijing Olympics. I have put my heart and soul into my comeback and done everything I could to get ready in time to compete in Beijing,” Hamm said in a statement released by USA Gymnastics.Hamm broke his hand May 22 at the national championships, just 11 weeks before the start of the games. He had surgery five days later and pushed his recovery in hopes he’d be healthy enough to help the Americans win a medal and defend his all-around title.

But a hand injury is one of the toughest for a gymnast to overcome. Every one of the six events puts a heavy load of stress on the hand, and many moves require the hand to be twisted sharply or to support a gymnast’s entire body weight.

World's highest cricket ground in Himachal awaits official matches

Located at an altitude of 7,500 feet above sea-level, the Chail cricket ground in Himachal Pradesh is described to be the highest cricket ground in the world.

Despite its unique location, Chail cricket ground is today starved of first class matches.

The Curator-groundsman's absence has left the cricket pitch in shambles, and the State's cricket association seems to be least worried.

Local youth use the venue for inter-school matches and units of the Indian Army located nearby hold their sports meets and march-pasts.

This ground was created after levelling a hilltop by the cricket loving Bhupinder Singh, the Maharaja of Patiala in 1893. uge trees of deodar and pine surround the playground.

For many years, the cricket ground merited a mention in the Guinness Book of World Records. Though the record has not been broken, Guinness Book has decided to delete the documentation because no competitive cricket is being held here.

"This cricket ground of Chail has been existing since the times of Maharaja Bhupendra Singh who had established it. It has always been known by the name of a cricket ground because the Maharaja used to play friendly matches with the Britishers," said Rajesh Sharma, a sport lover.

Local youth believe that the ground despite so much neglect can still be restored. It can also promote tourism in the region. They want the ground to be properly developed as a cricket ground.

Avinash Katoch, one cricket fan said although since no international cricket match has been played at Chail, many leading Test players still come to practice here.

Himachal Pradesh government is also interested in building a cricket stadium at this highest ground.

"This cricket ground is under the possession of the Army. We are planning to request them to give the land to us for the purpose of making a stadium. Whether it is Chail's cricket ground or Anne Dale Ground at Shimla, we are ready to give a compensatory land to the army people. We will speak to the State Cricket Association and will make good cricket stadiums at Chail and Shimla," said Prem Kumar Dhumal, Chief Minister of Himachal Pradesh.

In 1891, Maharaj Bhupinder Singh of Patiala incurred the wrath of Lord Kitchener. It led to the restriction of his entry into the summer capital, Shimla.

This incensed the Maharaja and he vowed to build a new summer capital for himself. So he rebuilt the place (Chail) as per his requirements.

Chail is today surrounded by the forests of Chir Pine and giant Deodars trees.

Sports lovers in Chail and Shimla now long for a cricket Stadium and hope to have one soon. By Hemant Chauhan(ANI)

India vs Sri lanka first test match

COLOMBO, Sri Lanka (Reuters) - Opener Malinda Warnapura scored 50 not out as Sri Lanka reached 85-2 at stumps after Wednesday's rain-interrupted first day of the first test against India.

India's new ball bowlers Ishant Sharma and Zaheer Khan claimed a wicket apiece during a single 22-over evening session after rain and a wet outfield delayed the start of play until 1530 local time (1000 GMT).

Sri Lanka captain Mahela Jayawardene was unbeaten on 16 when bad light stopped play for the day having added 28 runs for the third wicket with Warnapura.

Warnapura started shakily but scored quickly after playing himself in, hitting six boundaries in his 74-ball innings.

Sharma struck first for India with a lively delivery that bounced steeply and Michael Vandort (three) edged to wicket-keeper Dinesh Karthik.

Kumar Sangakkara (12), the world's number one batsman coming into this test series, edged a swinging delivery from left-armer Zaheer Khan to Rahul Dravid at slip.

Both teams went into the game with two spinners including unorthodox Sri Lanka debutant Ajantha Mendis who destroyed India with a haul of six wickets for 13 in the final of the Asia Cup one-day competition earlier this month.

Mendis Vs India

Colombo, July 19 (PTI) After wrecking the famed Indian batting line-up in the Asia Cup final, Sri Lanka's new spin sensation Ajantha Mendis now harbours dream of scalping the prize wicket of master blaster Sachin Tendulkar in the upcoming three-match Test series starting July 23.

Mendis created ripples during the Asia Cup in Pakistan early this month with his 'carrom ball' delivery, picking up 17 wickets in the continental tournament.

He single-handedly won the trophy for Sri Lanka by pocketing six Indian wickets in the final.

"It will be dream come true for me to get the wicket of Tendulkar, especially when he is on the threshold of surpassing Brian Lara'a world record of highest Test runs," said Mendis.

Tendulkar, who has 11782 runs from 147 Tests so far, is just 171 short of equaling the West Indian legend's 11953 runs.

Mendis, a Sri Lankan army officer, said that he is pumped up to show his potential against the famous batting quartet of Tendulkar, Sourav Ganguly, Rahul Dravid and VVS Laxman, who were not there in India's Asia Cup squad.

"Laxman, Tendulkar, Dravid and Ganguly are among the best batsmen in the world and I am eagerly looking forward to bowl against them.

"I will be happy to get the scalps of many other Indian batsmen," he said.

The young mystery bowler also revealed that apart from the 'carrom ball', he has developed a new delivery to unsettle the Indians.
