Tendulkar ton puts India on top of Australia

Sachin Tendulkar improved his world record with his 40th test century as India took a marginal advantage over Australia after Thursday's opening day of the series-deciding fourth test.

Tendulkar's 109 from 188 balls was the fulcrum of India's 311-5 stumps score, which put the hosts in a good position to secure the result it needs to maintain or improve its current 1-0 series lead and take the Border-Gavaskar Trophy.

He shared a 146-run partnership with V.V.S Laxman for the fourth wicket that steadied the innings after the top order lost three quick wickets shortly before lunch.

Tendulkar, who holds the world run-scoring record with 12,261, played the Australian attack comfortably until he neared his first century of the series.

The Australians missed two chances to remove the right-hander when Mitchell Johnson dropped him on 85 and Brett Lee spilled a tough chance on 96. Both chances came when Tendulkar tried to slog debutant offspinner Jason Krejza over mid-off.

Tendulkar then spent 12 balls on 99 before cutting Krejza for four to bring up his 10th hundred against Australia. He reached the milestone from 166 deliveries, with 12 fours, and celebrated by raising his bat to the crowd and hugging Sourav Ganguly. Australian captain Ricky Ponting is second on the list of test century-makers with 36.

After winning the toss at the new Vidarbha Cricket Association stadium, India began strongly as opener Virender Sehwag blasted his way to an aggressive 66 from 69 deliveries, including nine fours and a six.

Sehwag and Murali Vijay _ standing in for the suspended Gautam Gambhir _ smashed 31 off the opening four overs to kick start a 98-run stand which ended when Shane Watson dug in a short ball and got the edge of Vijay's bat through to wicketkeeper Brad Haddin.

It prompted a mini-collapse, as Krejza _ who concede 32 runs from his opening three overs _ claimed his first test wicket in the next over, dismissing the out-of-form Rahul Dravid for a duck, caught at bat-pad.

Sehwag raced to his 16th test half-century and seemed set for a big score before playing-on to Krejza shortly before lunch.

Laxman, playing his 100th test, provided useful support for Tendulkar and brought up his 37th test half-century on the way to a 114-ball knock of 64.

He became Krejza's third victim when he tried to give himself room to cut, was surprised by the spin and left after Haddin juggled the edge.

Ganguly, who is retiring at the end of the game, and Tendulkar added 41 for the fifth wicket before Tendulkar was lbw to Johnson as Australia took the second new ball.

At stumps, Ganguly was unbeaten on 27 and skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni was 4 not out.

Krejza had a mixed opening day, taking three prized scalps for 138 in 28 overs at a run-rate of just under five.

Watson and Johnson were the only other wicket-takers on another tough day for Australia’s ineffective attack.

India Vs Australia - Cricket at its best

This post is to revive the memories of famous 'Very Very Special' Kolkata Test and of course Very very special innings by VVS Laxman. Touring Australia team in 2001 had already won 16 tests and it was on its way to make 17 test win in a row.
It was only the third time in 130 years of Test cricket that a team forced to follow on won the match.

Batting first Australia scored 445 in first innings. Only indian bowling highlights in this innings was a hat-rick by Harbhajan Singh. It was first Hatrick by an Indian in test cricket, though years later Irfan Pathan also scored a hatrick against Pakistan.

In reply India were all out for 171 with VVS laxman being the alone batsman to face the Australian bowlers with scoring 59 runs.

Following on 274 runs behind India did better the second time round but late in the day at 232 for four were still facing defeat with a day to spare. Rahul Dravid joined Laxman at this stage and the two batted till close of play.

The turning point occurred the following day when the pair batted throughout. It was an amazing transformation opening up interesting possibilities. The record 376-run partnership was not broken till the morning of the final day with Dravid out for 180. Laxman went on to get 281.

Indian inning was declared at 657 for seven thus Australians were given a victory target of 384 runs in 75 overs. All were thinking of a draw as Australia got off to a good start and opening stand of 74 runs.

Australia were 166 for three at the time of tea well headed for a draw. It was the time when Harbhajan who had taken seven for 123 in the first innings struck again.

The Aussies succumbed to pressure as Harbhajan took six for 73 and Tendulkar three for 31. With six overs to spare Glenn McGrath was leg before to Harbhajan and the astonishing turnabout was complete with India winning by 171 runs.

Sachin Tendulkar - 38th Test hundred - India vs Australia second test match

38 Test century by Sachin Tendulkar helped India cross the score of 400 in reply from Australia score of 463. India is currently India 459/7 (119.0 ov) with Sachin Tendulakr on 125 and Harbhajan Singh playing at 56. Still 33 overs are remaining for the day.

Performance of Indian team is improved from first test but his test match seem to be headin towards a draw. India team must be looking forward to reach the score of 550 plus but as match is headin towards a draw it will be worth enough for me if Sachin gets his double century.

VVS Laxman as usual played a crucial knock. He is really Very Very Special Laxman for Team India.

Indian Tour of Australia : India vs Australia 2007 - 2008

I love to see India playing against Australia in Australia. This is a real test for any team to face Australia in Australia. First teat between India and Australia will be played from 26 December to 30 December.

The Indians will play the second Test in Sydney from January 2-6 followed by two other Tests in Perth (Jan 16-20) and Adelaide (Jan 24-28).

The Test series will be followed by a triangular one-day tournament involving Sri Lanka as the third team.

The limited overs series would begin from February 3 with the Australian capital Canberra, not known to be a regular cricketing venue, hosting a India-Sri Lanka match on February 12.

I wonder when India team will get new coach fro them. India is without a coach and I hope that BCCI can find a good coach for Indian team very soon.
